Petersfield Town 2-0 Midhurst & Easebourne
Ten man Petersfield took the race for the playoffs to the final day by beating local rivals Midhurst on Easter Monday.
Despite losing 3-1 in the reverse fixture, goals from Jack Lee and Callum Kimber secured the 2-0 win leaving the Rams a point of the playoffs. They will have Ash Leigh on Saturday but his red card for violent conduct could see him miss the play offs if we get there.
Jack Lee returned for the first time since Boxing Day and proved to be immense. A great opening 20 minutes saw chances come for the hosts, Lee chested down a cross with his volley coming off the keeper and squirming wide.
Asad Ssemwogerere did well to get a shot off under pressure, hitting the post after 8 minutes. Lee, proving a nuisance had the ball in the net with a great looping header, however it was ruled out for grappling the defender.
Lewis Hamilton sent a free volley wide at the back post as he had a rare chance for the visitors.
Lee concluded a manic 21 minutes by being sent to the sin bin. Going down at a corner he complained to the referee who wasn’t interested, eventually sin binning him.
After an eventful start, the game settled with parallels being drawn to Saturday’s frustrating defeat. The Rams were the better side, just struggling to create clear cut chances.
The Midhurst goalkeeper looked shaky from corners but was backed up by a bulky defence in front. However a sumptuous corner bought the opener after 73 minutes. A great cross narrowly evaded Harrison Cable leaving Lee to nod in unmarked at the back post.
Relief turned to joy minutes later as Cable went down after a push by Owen Sherif in the box drawing the penalty. Callum Kimber stepped up with a great strike into the bottom right corner.
Leigh was sent off in the final moments after retaliating to a push with a swing of the arm. The referee failed to spot it but after deliberation with the linesman he was given his marching orders.
The result leaves a highly anticipated and high stakes game away to Roffey on Saturday to settle the season.
