Away - vs  Tadley Calleva  Lost 1-0

Petersfield slipped to defeat on Saturday in controversial fashion losing 1-0 to league favourites Tadley Calleva.

Petersfield restored Chris Hillman, Alex Miroy and Aaron Fennemore to the starting line-up and handed a debut to Sam Butler after his close season move from Rogate. Tadley started brightly and nearly scored in the 1st minute as a looping header from Jamie Green hit the woodwork. Tadley continued to press and pinned Petersfield back into their own half as they made the early running. The pressure led to nothing except long range efforts and half chances went harmlessly wide or met stubborn resistance from Gary Martin and the Petersfield defence. Gradually Petersfield began to work there way into the game and Aaron Fennemore spurned an opportunity as he broke into the area only to screw his effort wide. Town were now looking much more threatening as Alex Miroy cut in and fired a shot that the Tadley keeper fumbled only for the ball to be scrambled to safety.  Tadley were still asking their own questions and Gary Martin had to be alert on two occasions as Tadley probed for a breakthrough goal. Petersfield almost took the lead as Chris Hillman broke into the box and shoot straight at the keeper. In the dying moments of the half, Petersfield felt they should have had a penalty as Luke Bishop fired over whilst having his shirt pulled but the referee denied the claim. From the half time restart Petersfield took control and pressed for the opener and created several opportunities. However, 10 minutes in came a 5 minute spell that changed the game. The flashpoint followed a foul on Luke Bishop in which both teams became involved in scuffle. Out of the scuffle the referee decided that Nick Tayler had committed an offence and showed him the red card.  Petersfield were incensed, particularly after some of the actions fro the Tadley skipper who appeared to punch Luke Bishop while lying injured and became even more frustrated as Alex Miroy was shown a 2nd yellow for kicking the ball away.

Playing with 9 men Town faced an uphill battle against a strong Tadley side, but set about it in a positive manner. Town frustrated Tadley with Calvin Swan outstanding after switching to a defensive position. Tadley had the majority of possession but could not find a way through the Field defence. James Goulsbra, Sam Butler and Adam Ankorn were defending for their lives whilst Aaron Fennemore, Luke Bishop and Chris Hillman chased and harried the Tadley midfield. Liam Bray was fighting a lone battle up front but was able supported by the midfield on the break as Petersfield still tried to press. Tadley still held the upper hand and eventually the pressure told after 72 mins as after another hotly disputed free-kick, a moments lapse the tadley left back drove the ball through the crowded area and found its way into the net.  Petersfield did not throw in the towel and still tried to find a way back with Liam Bray and Aaron Fennemore both going desperately close to an equaliser. In the final 10 minutes despite playing with 9 men, Petersfield put 3 up front in an attempt to salvage something from the game but could not grab that elusive goal. On the final whistle, even the Tadley supporters applauded the effort of the Town players who had worked so hard only to be baffled by some of the refereeing inconsistency during the game.

Summary
Altohugh disappointed at the result, I was delighted with the effort and application shown by the team. If we can reproduce that type of determination and resilience for the rest of the season and continue to play some of the attacking football we are capable of, we have proved we can match anyone in this league. Consistency is the key.

Team : Gary Martin, Adam Ankorn, James Goulsbra, Sam Butler, Nick Tayler, Calvin Swan, Luke Bishop, Aaron Fennemore, Alex Miroy, Liam Bray, Chris Hillman . Subs : Russell Bishop, Barry Keogh, Wayne Harding, and Lloyd Patilla

Petersfield 1 Hythe & Dibden 2

PETERSFIELD Town’s eagerly anticipated opening match of the season against Hythe met with disappointment as Town slid to a 2-1 home defeat.

Despite dominating the game from start to finish, creating numerous chances, Field could not recover from conceding two poor goals in the first half.

Petersfield started brightly and could have scored as early as the first minute when Alex Miroy outstripped the Hythe defence, only to send an attempted lob into the keeper’s hands. Field continued to dominate and after work from Gary Buller, skipper Aaron Fennemore broke into the area but was foiled by good keeping.

Hythe stunned the home side with a breakaway goal. Hesitation between the home defence and the keeper allowed a Hythe forward to nip in to steer the ball into the empty net.

As the half wore on, Petersfield maintained the upper hand and had further opportunities through Gary Buller and a far-post header from Rob Hansler which hit the side netting, but shortly before half-time another moment’s uncertainty led to Hythe stealing a second goal to put Petersfield two goals down at the break.

The second period continued in the same vein with Field dominating territory and possession. Early in the half Petersfield brought on Chris Hillman and Liam Bray to try to find the breakthrough.

Within ten minutes Hillman's persistence won a corner and Miroy delivered a perfect ball for Fennemore to execute a well worked set-piece routine.

Further chances went begging as Petersfield searched for the equaliser and Hythe clung on to their lead, running down the clock whenever possible.

With 15 minutes remaining, Hythe had a player sent off for alleged abusive language to the referee and Field sensed an opportunity and sent three up front.

In a last frantic period, Calvin Swan, Rob Hansler, Fennemore and Barry Keogh all went close to earning a point but it wasn’t to be.

Petersfield: Martin, Williams, Goulsbra, Swan, Hansler, Tayler, Fennemore, Ankorn, Buller, Miroy, Harding. Subs: Hillman, Bishop, Keogh, Tiffin, Bray.

Petersfield 4 Totton & Eling 1

AFTER the previous week’s opening day disappointment against Hythe and Dibden, Petersfield earned their first points of the season with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Totton & Eling.

Keeper Gary Martin passed a late fitness test, and Town made two changes to the previous week’s line-up with the inclusion of James Tiffin and Liam Bray.

Playing up the slope and into the driving rain, Petersfield made a slow start against a useful Totton & Eling side.

In the opening minutes Town were subjected to early pressure as Totton & Eling pushed for an early goal, but some resolute defending kept the scores level.

In the 12th minute, only a superb goal-line clearance by James Goulsbra prevented Field from conceding, and this proved to be a turning point as Petersfield began to take control.

Minutes later a sweeping move from defence involving Aaron Fennemore and Alex Miroy found centre-half Joe Williams breaking from the back.

He made no mistake with a low drive from just outside the area. It was now Petersfield who pushed forward and it came as no surpise when they doubled the lead on 22 minutes.

Striker Alex Miroy's persistence won Town possession in the opposition’s half, and he played a great one-two with Liam Bray and crossed to the back post for Fennemore to find the net from close range.

Petersfield were now in full control with the defence of James Tiffin, James Goulsbra, Joe Williams and Nick Tayler giving Totton no chance of getting back into the game.

A third goal came on 39 minutes as Fennemore hit a great effort into the far corner from 25 yards out.

Half-time came with Petersfield wanting more of the same. Chris Hillman and Gary Buller were providing good penetration down the flanks and Calvin Swan and Fennemore were in control in the midfield battle.

As the half wore on Petersfield looked the more likely to add another goal, and Alex Miroy duly obliged.

Picking the ball up on the left wing he cut inside and thundered a shot beyond the outstretched dive of the Totton keeper.

The game was marred by a bad challenge on Williams who had to substituted by Luke Bishop.

For a few moments Petersfield became unsettled and conceded after a goalmouth scramble left the rarely-troubled Martin no chance.

Barry Keogh and Wayne Harding were introduced into the action and Town quickly re-establish the upper hand.

Further opportunities for Bishop, Fennemore and Gary Buller came and went and the game petered out in difficult conditions.

Petersfield manager Paul Ryan said: “After the previous week’s disapointment this was the type of result and performance we were looking for, with every single player involved contributing in a big way.

“Our defensive play was assured and decisive, our midfield won their individual battles and when we attacked we looked capable of scoring on a number of occasions, causing Totton all sorts of problems.

“We were excellent today but know we need to be more consistent and cannot afford too many slips-ups like the Hythe game.

“Our finishing was clinical and we didn’t make the individual errors of the previous week.”

Petersfield: Martin, Tiffin, Goulsbra, Swan, Williams, Tayler, Fennemore, Buller, Bray, Miroy, Hillman. Subs: Bishop, Keogh, Harding, Ankorn, Smith.

Petersfield 2 US Portsmouth 1
PETERSFIELD went top of Wessex League Division 1 with a hard-fought victory at home to US Portsmouth on Monday.
Petersfield went into the top two clash deprived of Aaron Fennemore, Calvin Swan and James Tiffin through suspension and with Chris Hillman still sidelined with a knee injury. This meant returns to the starting 11 for Luke and Russell Bishop and Adam Ankorn.
Town started well and caused the visitors problems, particularly through strong running from Liam Bray and Alex Miroy.
Early opportunities for Gary Buller and Liam Bray could not be turned into goals and as the half wore on United Services started to ask some questions of the home defence.
Good defending from James Goulsbra and Ankorn kept the scores level, but the visitors began to take control and from a half-cleared corner, Services took the lead with a superb finish from the edge of the area.
Field came out in the second half with all guns blazing and seized the upper hand. The Bishops began to win the midfield tussle and Miroy was causing Services problems with his intelligent running.
Town almost levelled on 53 minutes when Wayne Harding swung in a great delivery from a free-kick which Miroy headed powerfully towards goal, only for Nathan Ashmore to make a stunning save. Petersfield brought off Buller for Rob Hansler, pushing Joe Williams into central midfield.
Within minutes, the switch paid off as Miroy outstripped Services defence and finished well to draw Town level.
It was all Petersfield now and it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead.
The breakthrough came on 74 minutes when Miroy again found space in the Services box and beat the desperate dive of Ashmore with an assured shot.
More chances followed but in a rare attack Services almost equalised as a dangerous free-kick was swept across the face of Gary Martin’s goal. To Petersfield's relief it eluded everyone and narrowly missed creeping in at the far corner. Petersfield kept possession well and could have sealed the game when Liam Bray was sent clear but was denied by another excellent save from Ashmore.
Petersfield boss Paul Ryan said: “What is extremely satisfying was the fact that we made a number of changes today but you wouldn't have known.”
Petersfield: Martin, Ankorn, Goulsbra, Bishop, Williams, Tayler, Bishop, Buller, Bray, Miroy, Harding. Subs: Keogh, Hutton, Hansler, Cowan.

Stockbridge 0 Petersfield 3
THIS impressive win underlines the transformation emerging in Petersfield Town’s fortunes this season under new manager Paul Ryan.
It was only in April that Petersfield suffered a 6-0 battering at Stockbridge. On Saturday, Town started without any of the players who played that evening.
Petersfield made one change to the team that demolished Aldermaston 7-1 on Wednesday, bringing in Wayne Harding for the injured Chris Hillman.
Town started brightly playing some controlled football but neither team created too much in the way of clear-cut chances.
It was Petersfield who had the first chance on 20 minutes when Alex Miroy crossed leaving Bray with just the keeper to beat but he missed the opportunity to put Petersfield ahead.
Stockbridge began to get into the game and following a mix-up in defence almost scored but no-one managed to apply the finishing touch.
Two minutes later Stockbridge hit the bar with a lob that left Gary Martin stranded. Town responded by hitting the bar at the other end, Aaron Fennemore the man going close.
The teams went in at half-time scoreless but Petersfield broke the deadlock within two minutes when Miroy found Liam Bray clean through on goal, and this time he made no mistake with a decisive finish.
This goal spurred Petersfield on to totally control the second half with Gary Martin becoming a spectator in the Town goal. Wayne Harding, Fennemore, Gary Buller and Calvin Swan were dominating the midfield battle and providing the attack with good service.
It took until the 75th minute for Town to make the game safe with Nick Tayler heading home from a Harding free-kick.
Almost immediately the excellent Miroy left a trail of defenders in his wake, but with only the keeper to beat applied a weak finish into the keeper’s hands.
However, he was not be denied and in the final minutes tormented the home defenders before being brought down inside the box. From the resulting penalty he dusted himself down to finish well and seal the game for Petersfield.
Town boss Paul Ryan said later: “Stockbridge are a tough team to beat on their own patch so we are delighted with the performance and the points.
“Particularly pleasing is the clean sheet which James Tiffin, Nik Tayler, Joe Williams, James Goulsbra and Gary Martin deserved for their hard work.”
Petersfield: Martin, Tiffin, Goulsbra, Swan, Williams, Tayler, Fennemore, Buller, Bray, Miroy, Harding. Subs: Bishop, Keogh, Ankorn, Bishop, Matt Hutton.

Petersfield 7 Aldermaston 1
PETERSFIELD Town carried on where they left off against Totton & Eling with a convincing 7-1 defeat of Aldermaston last Wednesday.
Town made no changes after there excellent performance the previous Saturday and immediately took the game to Aldermaston. Within eight minutes they were two goals up.
Gary Martin launched a long kick forward for Liam Bray to unsettle the away team's defence and from the flick-on Alex Miroy surged into the area only to be denied by some last-ditch defending.
However, Aaron Fennemore picked up the loose ball and slotted it coolly home.
Straight away Field went two up when Miroy cut in from the right to curl a superb effort into the far corner of the net.
For the next 20 minutes Aldermaston gradually worked there way into the game and reduced the deficit after a long-range effort took a wicked deflection to deceive Gary Martin.
Within a minute Gary Buller restored the two-goal lead when he scored from close range.
Half-time came and went and to their credit Aldermaston did not give up playing some good football without causing Petersfield too many problems.
On 52 minutes Fennemore put Town 4-1 up from 20 yards after a poor clearance by the Aldermaston keeper.
Miroy made it five soon afterwards when he intercepted a pass on the edge of the Aldermaston area and slipped the ball past the advancing keeper.
It seemed that every time Petersfield attacked they would score and in the 76th minute Fennemore scored the best goal of the game.
Picking the ball up just inside the Aldermaston half he beat two players and drove a great effort inside the post to make it six and complete his hat-trick.
Substitute Barry Keogh came on and scored a fine individual goal to round off the scoring.
Petersfield manager Paul Ryan said: “Although the attacking side of our game was excellent, it was a very good all-round team performance.
“We are creating lots of openings and opportunities but in this game we were clinical, as opposed to the defeat against Hythe & Dibden in the opening game of the season.”
Petersfield: Martin, Tiffin, Goulsbra, Swan, Williams, Tayler, Fennemore, Buller, Bray, Miroy, Hillman. Subs: Bishop, Keogh, Ankorn, Harding, Ben Hough.

Fawley 2 Petersfield 1
PETERSFIELD lost top spot in the Wessex League Division 1 after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Fawley on Saturday.
Petersfield went into the game without joint top corers Alex Miroy and Aaron Fennemore, as well as Calvin Swan and James Tiffin, but welcomed back Chris Hillman after injury.
The sign of things to come was shown when Petersfield turned up late after suffering a breakdown en route to the game and they looked sluggish in the early stages with Fawley making the early running.
Fawley had chances to take the lead but were denied by good keeping from Gary Martin and some resolute defending. Gradually Field began to work themselves into the game but openings for Liam Bray and Barry Keogh came to nothing.
Joe Williams was breaking well from the middle and almost broke the deadlock when shooting at the keeper from the edge of the box. Petersfield took the lead after good work from Wayne Harding and Barry Keogh. Gary Buller crossed from the right, finding Harding six yards out and he provided a clinical finish.
Despite leading 1-0 at half-time, Town were still second best but could have extended their lead just after the break when Williams broke the offside trap only to be tackled as he prepared to shoot. Fawley were still in control but were again denied by Martin.
However, after a period of sustained pressue they equalised after sloppy marking from a corner. Minutes later, the home side took the lead after Rob Hansler was caught in possession inside the Petersfield penalty area, and although Martin and Tayler made goal line stops, the ball broke kindly for Fawley to take the lead.
Eventually Petersfield were spurred into life and Bray forced a good save from the Fawley keeper. With ten minutes to go Town thought they had forced a leveller when Keogh hit the bar from a free-kick just outside the box.
Petersfield boss Paul Ryan said: “The day started off badly and didn’t improve. We were second best in all areas today against a very good Fawley side. Individually and as a unit we were not firing on all cylinders and need to improve quickly before Saturday’s visit to one of the favourites for the league, Tadley Calleva.”
Petersfield: Martin, Ankorn, Goulsbra, Williams, Tayler, Hansler, Bishop, Buller, Keogh, Bray, Harding. Subs: Waters, Butler, Philpott, Hillman, Patilla.
